Application Areas Of BOPP Film

BOPP film is a vital flexible packaging material widely used in industries such as packaging and printing; its downstream applications span packaging, printing, electronics and electrical appliances, and new energy.

Based on application, BOPP films are primarily categorized into: standard types (glossy/flat films for printing, lamination, and coating), heat-sealable types (for cigarette packaging, general packaging, etc.), label films, metallized films, and capacitor films. Standard films (glossy films) are suitable for food packaging, paper lamination, and printing/lamination for general packaging purposes. Cigarette film is a high-margin BOPP product that demands rigorous technical standards. Heat-sealable films are mainly used for the heat-seal packaging of food, pharmaceuticals, and electrical components. Pearlescent films are widely used for the direct packaging of products such as dried fruits, ice cream, candy, and premium soap gifts, and also serve as excellent substrates for printing. Transfer films can replace PET transfer films in the production of gold and silver cardstock.

BOPP films are extensively used in tobacco packaging, covering both inner and outer packaging. Inner packaging primarily utilizes high-gloss BOPP transfer base films (for cigarette inner liner paper) and laser-holographic BOPP base films (for cigarette pack cardstock). Outer packaging (BOPP cigarette film) is divided into standard cigarette film and heat-shrinkable cigarette packaging film; the latter is further categorized into micro-shrink, low-shrink, and high-shrink types, with high-shrink films encompassing various functional varieties such as anti-reddening/anti-wrinkling general-purpose types and high-gloss shrink types.

BOPP electrical film (also known as BOPP capacitor film) is a high-end, specialized product for the electronics and power sectors. Manufactured from high-purity polypropylene resin, it features exceptional cleanliness, ultra-thin gauge, and superior electrical properties. It serves as the core dielectric material for film capacitors, with primary applications in new energy vehicles, photovoltaic energy storage, and smart grids, alongside steady demand in traditional sectors like home appliances and industrial control. The global market size for BOPP capacitor film is projected to reach approximately 6.4 billion RMB by 2025. Looking at the market as a whole, the supply of general-purpose BOPP film products is ample; however, functional BOPP films (such as heat-sealable, laser, and capacitor films) face supply shortages due to their high technical complexity, long R&D cycles, and rapidly growing market demand. Consequently, China's market for high-end functional BOPP films remains heavily reliant on imports.

my country's production and consumption of BOPP films have continued to rise. In 2021, domestic production reached 4.076 million tons, with an apparent demand of 3.7154 million tons and a market size of 42.146 billion yuan. Moving forward, the industry is set to transition toward high-end and functional products; enterprises must therefore strengthen R&D for high-end offerings, enhance value-added capabilities, and expand applications into emerging sectors such as new energy.
